"....have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language. Don’t search for the answers, which could not be given to you now, because you would not be able to live them. And the point is to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer.”
― Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet

DISCOVERING THE ART OF THE POSSIBLE

When was the last time you felt like there was absolutely nothing in this world that you cannot achieve? Or rather to put more perspective into that line – When was the last time you felt that there was absolutely nothing in the world that you cannot achieve once you set your mind to it?

And I mean Reeeaaaaallly “Set your mind to it”!!! No wishful thinking, no illusionary craziness or the “if only” I had that “then only” I could have done that internal speech, that sometimes makes you do nothing but just procrastinate on what you ought to have been doing all along! Can something be that simple? Just setting your mind to it and then simply going out and doing that?

Looking back I wonder how different are people, who have planned their whole life and then made steady progress to fulfil it and those so called ‘lucky ones’ who never had ‘any’ plan of ‘any’ sort and had no idea what journey their first step towards that one big idea would lead to…but simply had the courage to take it!!! Were they really that lucky? Or was their so called success just a string of mere perfect coincidences?

Well maybe there is reason why everything happens the way it happens! Maybe there is a reason why the universe conspires to take us through the journey that we end up being an undeniable part of! In the words of Steve Jobs – “You can never connect the dots looking forward. You can only connect them looking backward”. And till you reach the stage where looking backwards makes any sense at all, you just have to keep moving forward, braving it all. In other words – "Just keep on, keeping on!" and “If you are going through hell. Keep going!”

It’s like putting together the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. At first, you have no idea which piece to start with…but start you do with some random piece that your hand first picks and then you weave your way through that…slowly connecting and reconnecting the pieces till it assumes one whole meaningful shape!

Remember you didn’t know what the final picture was going to look like when you started. You did not have the formula for picking up the right pieces one after another in order to complete the puzzle in the quickest possible time!  But you started with some random piece that made sense for you to start with or did not and from there you picked up more random pieces to connect to that. Some didn’t connect, but some did…you kept the ones that did not make sense aside and then as you built your puzzle you picked those pieces you cast aside and put them in wherever it made sense to fit it in. The beginning was slow and tedious but soon once you got hold of it, it all came together like you knew where you were going and had a pretty good mental glimpse of the picture that was meant to manifest.

Now think….replace the word ‘jigsaw puzzle’ with the word ‘life’. Isn’t that what life is also like when you look back and try to connect the dots? Yet it seems so simple when we look at it as a puzzle but becomes instantly complicated when you read it in terms of life! Why? I guess it’s just our inherent nature to complicate things…just an unconscious belief that it can’t be that simple! In other words here’s what I believe – “Perceiving things from the way we think things are, deceives us from seeing the way things actually are!”

Perceptions matter! For some people when plans go awry, they get discouraged and then like everyone they go through the ‘Dry’ period where nothing really makes sense. I call this period as the “Letting go part of life”. Although seldom do we realise it at that point – this is the period we truly let go! It’s the period where we experience in its full, our fears, our incapacities, our doubts, our insecurities and question our beliefs consistently with what faith seems to be clinging onto it.  What we unconsciously do, but don’t realise is that, unless we understand them and experience them without the usual resistance that we normally have towards such things, that’s the point where we subconsciously send a signal to our brains telling it that - ‘It’s OK!’. When you learn to accept your circumstances it gives you an innate sense of responsibility over it. You tell your subconscious mind which defines 95% of your moments in life, that I’m no longer afraid and if this is what this feels like - Well ‘It’s OK!’..I now understand that it’s a part of life! This is the place where magic and miracles happen! All those fears and illusions that have clouded your thoughts for so long get the hint that they no longer have that control over your mind. When you accept something then that means you are now unperturbed by it.  Accepting is letting go!! The unwelcome thoughts and ideas no longer feel welcome and you slowly begin to realise that they start leaving in the same manner they first became a part of you.  What is important is for us is to be patient and understand that - ‘It’s OK!’ – "TO UNDERSTAND THAT WHEREVER YOU ARE RIGHT NOW, THAT’S EXACTLY WHERE YOU ARE MEANT TO BE!"

It’s like picking up the first piece of that jigsaw puzzle. In other words taking that first step towards living an authentic life with trust in your heart and faith in your mind. You are no longer hiding from the world. A feeling of being reborn from your own ashes overtakes you and now no matter what circumstance you are in, you can’t wait to completely dust off those last bits of ashes clinging onto you and take your first breath of fresh air. To a new life that has awaited you for so long. A new life that is now YOUR life!!! The only one that you’ve got to live with while still breathing on this planet.

And yeah..if you somehow you find yourself slipping back to what you know was just an illusion, in your mind, once again, tell yourself that - ‘It’s OK!!’ Remember your subconscious has been a host to those unwelcome negative feelings for quite awhile, so it will take sometime to re-adjust to this new thought process. Don’t resist it when it happens. Now that you know how you got out, don’t make the mistake that kept you down there for so long – the mistake of resisting it! “What you resist – PERSISTS!!” So now that you have found the key, just experience that feeling slowly inching to become a part of you, no matter how strong an aversion it may present itself to be. Just do what you know at the bottom of your heart,  you need to be doing, to get you to wherever your current goal is meant to take you. Just live life in the moment. You will soon reach a point of time or a place where it no longer will be a part of you and you suddenly begin to see everything with clarity and forethought. Everything fits in! Everything begins to make sense! You’ll realise that living life in the moment is much, much more simpler than being caught up in the rut of either the past or the future as they both don’t ever exist. What truly exists is the NOW!!

Love what you do and do what you love! Enjoy every bit of your time here. Imagine every day as your last. Live it fully. Do the undone. Do the things you always dreamed or visualized yourself accomplishing but never really took serious enough action to get it done. Take that first step!

In the words of a man whom I consider to be not just a personal guide but who's philosophy changed my perception of life - JIM ROHN - "Don't wish it were easier! Wish you were better!"

  1. A good read :) like the part where you wrote about moving forward is what really counts. Small steps but nevertheless, the courage to sail through the storms and over the clouds.
